The US Energy Information Administration reports that the average gasoline price is over $2.50 per gallon. If you spend a considerable amount of time on the road, you’ll find that gasoline eats up a lot of your dollars. In that case, a gas station credit card may be a good option for you. In this article we’ll review the Shell credit card, plus give you a few other alternative options.
Shell is a major gas station with over 14,000 locations across the U.S. alone. It offers a number of credit cards that may allow you to save money at the pump. The two most popular credit cards offered by Shell include Shell Fuel Rewards Card and Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard.
Each credit card offers an opportunity to save money on fuel, but the one that’s right for you depends on your gas-buying habits. If you’re interested in getting a Shell credit card and want to know if it’s right for you, then read this comprehensive review that discusses the two major credit cards offered by Shell.
Shell Credit Cards
Shell Fuel Rewards Card is like a typical store card as it can only be used at Shell fuel stations in the United States. On the other hand, you’re free to use Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard at any station in the country
Both Shell credit cards offer savings of as much as 10 cents per each gallon up to 20 gallons on fuel purchased from Shell. New cardholders can save a maximum of 30 cents per each gallon up to a total of 20 gallons on the first five gas purchases they make at Shell. These savings on the Shell credit card are directly applied at the Shell station. In addition, both credit cards offer rebates of 10 percent on the first $1,200 cardholder spends at Shell for purchases that aren’t gas-related.
Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard gives 2 percent rebates to consumers on their first $10,000 spent on groceries and dining purchases each year and 1 percent on certain other purchases.
Security features are also offered by both Shell credit cards like $0 liability on unauthorized, fraudulent transactions.
As a cardholder, you don’t have to request for redemption in the rebates. They are applied automatically as a credit against the purchases you make at Shell.
Charges and Fees of Shell Credit Cards
Both the Shell Fuel Rewards Card and Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard come without an annual fee. The annual percentage rate (APR) of both the cards on purchases is 28.74 percent (variable) while the APR for cash advances is 29.99 percent (variable). Is a Shell Credit Card Right For You?
If you frequently purchase fuel, you could benefit from any one of the Shell credit cards. Both the Shell Fuel Rewards Card and Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard offer compelling benefits. Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard could be a good option for you if you frequently purchase gas from other stations and would like to save a few bucks on your fuel-related and other purchases like dining and groceries.
Alternatives to a Shell Credit Card
There are several other credit cards available in the United States that offer better rewards that a Shell credit card. Many of them offer better rewards than Shell cards when used at a gas station. For example, PenFed Platinum Rewards Signature Visa Card offers five points for every single dollar spent on gas purchases. Additionally, there are three points for every single dollar spent at a supermarket. The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is another good alternative to Shell credit cards as it offers 4 percent cash back on gas with a maximum of $7,000 a year.
Our Last Thoughts on the Shell Credit Card
With zero annual fees and an opportunity to save money on every gallon purchased from Shell, both Shell Fuel Rewards Card and Shell Fuel Rewards Mastercard offer compelling benefits to those who want to save on purchasing gas at Shell.
However, you should know that there are some cards that offer better overall rewards than Shell credit card. You may be better off with a cash back card or rewards credit card instead of a Shell credit card. Those cards may also offer better fuel rewards than Shell credit cards. Remember that some normal rewards cards provide discounts at all gas stations, not just at Shell. So, if you don’t always purchase fuel at Shell, you should consider other credit card options available to you.
